History of 32 Gothic

Gothic Heritage Estates – 32 Gothic Avenue

In 1889, the second Mayor of the Town of West Toronto (George Johnston St. Leger) built his home at 32 Gothic Ave.  This originally two-storey mansion on a hilltop overlooked the Grenadier Pond ravine (this changed after modification to Bloor street, the addition of the subway line and the building of nearby condominiums).

After alterations in 1907 by architects Willis and Connery, Dr. William McCormack and his wife, Dr. Florence McCormack had acquired the property in 1908 and established the High Park Sanatarium which they ran until 1922 when Dr. Florence McCormack died.   In 1922 Dr. William McCormack rented it to the private maternity hospital,  Strathcona Hospital.

Today Gothic Heritage Estates is a unique luxurious residential property designated as a Heritage building under the Ontario Heritage Act.  A 7 Unit Condominium (2 units on lower level, 2 units on the main level, 2 units on the second level and 1 unit penthouse suite) The six units range in size around 1500 sq.ft. with the penthouse around 1800 sq.ft.

This building is featured in a  great book that I acquired “Old Toronto Houses” and can be found in the High Park and Junction Section (Page 247 in my first edition book).  They call it the Clandeboye and claim its original address is 30 Gothic although everywhere else I’ve researched refers to its modern day address of 32 Gothic Avenue.

Can’t believe there are any historical references to this building. I was born there in May, 1949 and wonder if there are any remaining medical records of births at this Hospital. Very interesting. Must check out the book! Thanks for this…..thought it was all lost to history!

My mother was born there as well in April 1943 and apparently many more of the Palmateer family… interesting… wonder how much the penthouse rents for?
